Barnard College is dedicated to practicing policies that maintain environmental sustainability without sacrificing our future generations’ ability to meet their needs. To that end, Barnard is actively pursuing measures to conserve energy and reduce its consumption and carbon footprint. This includes integrated planning efforts to purchase recycled materials for daily operations and construction, and promote awareness campaigns aimed at reducing waste and encouraging sustainable lifecycle behaviors. These efforts are supported by the College’s executive leadership and funded through the operating budget.

To date, measures to reduce consumption include major capital investments in the physical plant such as installing energy-efficient windows in the residence halls as well as implementing new maintenance criteria such as the use of Green Seal cleaning products.

Commitment to sustainability guided the design and materials choices for the Nexus, the new multi-use building currently being constructed on campus. From plumbing and mechanical systems to structural materials, the Nexus, which will be LEED-certified, will illustrate the College’s commitment to sound environmental practices.

As a leading New York academic institution, Barnard has is a challenge partner in Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s PlaNYC2030, a plan to enhance the urban environment of all five New York City boroughs. Barnard has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% within 10 years. To meet this challenge, we are committed to not only reducing the amount of energy the campus consumes, but to reduce waste and encourage environmentally-friendly habits among the Barnard community. Campus Eco-Reps, Faculty and the Student Government Association are fully engaged and are key to the success of this effort.
