Diversity

“[A]t Barnard you will encounter someone who is unfamiliar and something that challenges your view of the world. Not all of it is comfortable. But if you extend yourself, you will be transformed, and your life will be so much richer because of it.” –Dorothy Ko, Professor of History

At Barnard, diversity is central to our mission. As an institution of higher learning, we are a democracy of ideas. As a small campus in the incomparable City of New York, we are a place like no other. Our vibrant community crosses boundaries of geography, religion, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds to find shared experiences and to open minds. At Barnard, voicing opinions, no matter how singular or strong, is the essence of our culture. And respecting the unfamiliar is a challenge we embrace.

Barnard students come from nearly every state and more than 40 countries. They pursue environmental justice, music and dance, writing, politics, and feminist thought through more than 250 student organizations. They earn bachelor degrees in close to 50 fields and go on to careers in every realm of society. And no matter where they come from or where they are heading, they share a boundless passion for learning inspired by a unique and diverse faculty.
