Dear new student,

Congratulations! I am pleased to be able to welcome you as one of the newest members of the Barnard community. I promise you that your decision to attend Barnard is an excellent one and that this decision will help guide you in any direction that you are hoping to take yourself both academically and personally.

As you are getting ready to come to Barnard, you may be having some mixed feelings about going off to college, living in the big city or what classes you should take. I am certain though, despite any worries or concerns you might have, that Barnard College, Columbia University, and New York City will help shape you as a person and prepare you with the skills necessary for any goals you may want to achieve.

When you arrive on campus this fall, the first few days will be jam-packed with exciting events with other new students, faculty members, and returning students who will serve as mentors and help guide you through your first days at Barnard and in New York. These initial days are sure to get you prepared and excited for the year ahead. The New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) is a week-long series of events and activities for students of Barnard College, Columbia College, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and for the first time this year, The Columbia University School of General Studies, which is geared towards preparing you for academic life, acquainting you with the campus, and providing you the opportunity to explore NYC.

One of the tools you will receive upon your arrival to help you familiarize yourself with your new community is an Orientation Facebook that is published by NSOP. It is a pictorial dictionary of the Columbia University undergraduate class of 2012! In addition to pictures of the members of your class, there is information about New York City and student life at Columbia University. In order to compile the Facebook, we need your assistance. Please follow the link:

http://www.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/rad/facebook/upload.pl

Here you will be instructed on how to upload your photo to the face book database. It is essential that you follow the directions exactly or you picture will not make it into the 2008 Facebook.

Due to publication deadlines, we ask that you upload your photos no later than May 30, 2008. Photos received after our publication deadline will not be able to be included in the Facebook. Stayed tuned to updates about the Facebook on the NSOP website at www.columbia.edu/cu/orientation .

If you have any questions regarding NSOP, please do not hesitate to call the College Activities office at (212)-854-2096, email us at orientation@columbia.edu, or visit us on the web at www.columbia.edu/cu/orientation . I wish you the best of luck in the coming months.

Kelly Rodal

On behalf of myself and the rest of the Barnard orientation committee, I am pleased to welcome you to Barnard and look forward to seeing you this fall.

Sincerely,

Kelly Rodal
