MUSIC
OPPORTUNITIES AT BARNARD COLLEGE
Both
the MSM or Juilliard cross-registration programs give Barnard
students the opportunity to take private instrumental lessons
while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College.
Barnard’s Music Department also offers our students
the opportunity either to take academic music courses, have
music lessons, or both. Regardless of their involvement
with MSM, Juilliard or Barnard College’s music department,
any and all interested students can pursue a wide variety
of performance opportunities with the many Barnard/Columbia
ensembles.
Admission
to either cross-registration program is highly selective,
and entails a full application and audition process separate
and apart from the Barnard College admission process. Participation
in either program is predicated on admission to Barnard
College. Interested students should consult the specific
program descriptions below for application procedures and
requirements. There is no additional tuition cost for either
cross-registration program. Current Barnard first-year students
may also apply to either cross-registration program by submitting
an application to audition per the requirements below.
If you
have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the
Barnard Office of Admissions at 212-854-2014 or via e-mail
at rpalacio@barnard.edu.

PROGRAMS WITH THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL
Interested
Barnard College
applicants have access to instrumental and voice instruction
at the Juilliard School through 2 distinct programs: the
Juilliard-Barnard Exchange Program and the Dual-Degree program.
Details about and instructions on how to apply to each program
is described below:
The Barnard College-Juilliard
School
Cross-Registration Program (The Exchange Program):
Interested
applicants can apply to cross-register for weekly instrumental,
jazz, and vocal instruction with the Juilliard faculty.
To participate, applicants must complete the formal application
and successfully audition at Juilliard. Most candidates
admitted to the Exchange are incoming first-year students
and should apply to the cross-registration program at the
same time they apply for admission to Barnard.
The
cross-registration program is designed so that students
can participate in three consecutive years of lesson instruction
at Juilliard. Students already taking lessons in the cross-registration
program may also apply, in their junior year, for the Joint
Degree (details below) or petition for a fourth year of
study in the Exchange.
All
Barnard College applicants—perspective and
current—interested in this program must also submit
a Juilliard Application for Admission, including pre-screening
materials. When applying to the Barnard-Juilliard Exchange
program, each applicant must indicate on the Juilliard application
that she is applying for the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard
Exchange (instrumental, jazz, and voice lessons only), not
the B.M. program at Juilliard. The B.M. at Juilliard is
an entirely separate program. She must also indicate on
the Barnard College supplement her intent to apply
to the Juilliard cross-registration program.
The Barnard College-Juilliard
School
Joint Degree
Interested
students can participate in a joint degree program whereby
students can earn a B.A. or B.S. from Barnard
College and M.M. from the Juilliard School
in five years. To apply to the joint degree program, Barnard College
students must have completed at least 3 years of course
work at Barnard, including all distributional requirements
and major or concentration requirements, and already must
have participated in the Juilliard cross-registration program
for at least one year. Voice candidates for the M.M. may
need 6 years of study to complete the Joint Degree depending
on preparation.
After
completing the formal application and successfully auditioning
at Juilliard in their junior year, students in the joint
degree enter Juilliard in their senior year. Joint degree
students also spend the following year enrolled at Juilliard.
Students receiving Barnard
College
financial aid will then be subject to the financial aid
policies at Juilliard while a student at Juilliard.
Auditions
Live
auditions for both programs with the Juilliard
School
are conducted in early March for fall admission. The application
deadline for the Juilliard-Barnard
cross-registration program AND the M.M. program is December 1 for March auditions.
Interested students should obtain an application and audition
information from the Juilliard Office of Admissions and
submit it directly to Juilliard. For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at The Juilliard
School at www.juilliard.edu
or (212) 799-5000, ext. 223 or at admissions@juilliard.edu.
THE
BARNARD COLLEGE MUSIC MAJOR
The
music major at Barnard College gives students the opportunity
to pursue both scholarly and performance studies in music.
Auditions for private voice and instrument lessons with
Barnard and Columbia faculty are conducted during the first
weeks of each semester. For more information about the Barnard
College Music Department, visit the department
website.
At the
beginning of each semester, auditions are held for the University
Jazz Orchestra, University Orchestra, Collegium Musicum,
Barnard-Columbia Chorus, Barnard-Columbia Chamber Singers,
and the Chamber Ensemble and various other music groups,
including several student-run a cappella groups.
