Why study at Barnard in the Spring?
Spending a semester at Barnard College presents a wonderful opportunity for engaging study in a unique setting: a small, liberal arts college for women in New York City. Barnard’s Spring in New York program will allow students to take advantage of:

  • Small, dynamic classes taught by Barnard faculty members with Barnard students. All Spring in New York students are encouraged to choose classes from our extensive catalog (link) and to apply for an internship. Students will enroll in at least four courses (12 points).
  • Internship opportunities throughout New York in fields including finance, fashion, the arts or media
  • New York City as your laboratory, integrating the city’s resources in your learning both within and beyond the classroom
  • New York City’s cultural resources including discounted tickets to Broadway shows and free admission to museums

Who Should Apply?
Undergraduate students who are degree candidates at other colleges and have completed a full year of study may apply for admission as visiting students. Candidates for Spring in New York should have a satisfactory college record and a letter of approval from the dean or major adviser from the degree-granting institution. (take a leave of absence from current school while working out the classes they will take here on campus so they will transfer back to their institution of origin)

Unfortunately, Barnard College is unable to offer financial assistance to visiting students. However, students may be able to bring their aid with them from their current institution or get outside funding from foundations and local organizations. Please check with your current institution about bringing your aid with you during your Spring in New York semester. Barnard’s financial aid website has a list of some helpful links to possible outside funding.

Housing

Campus housing will be guaranteed for all Spring in New York students. Spring in New York students will receive a housing application after admission.

Internships

Spring in New York students have the opportunity to pursue an internship during the term in a variety of fields throughout New York City. Barnard’s Office of Career Development can assist students in finding internships and will provide a one day internship counseling session prior to New Student Orientation in January. The session will include resume building, interviewing skills, and an introduction to the internship database and the Career Development resources. The Office of Career Development’s Internship web page can provide answers to frequently asked questions about internship opportunities. [Read about previous Interns in Action.]
