BARNARD COLLEGE INCUNABULAR RECORDS

1889 to 1904

The earliest records chronicle the first 15 years of Barnard College history, from the college’s birth in 1889 as an experiment in women’s higher education without the benefit of an endowment, to the years immediately following the attainment of an independent faculty under the intercorporate agreement consummated with Columbia University in 1900. This portion of the collection largely consists of correspondence, authored by trustees, administrators, faculty, and the general public. Among these correspondents are such notable figures as Annie Nathan Meyer, Seth Low, John D. Rockefeller Sr., Jacob Schiff, Nicholas Murray Butler, Melvil Dewey, and Barnard's first chief administrators, Ella Weed (served 1889-1894), Emily James Putnam (served 1894-1900), and Laura Drake Gill (served 1901-1907). Includes Personal and Corporate Name Index.
