On
November 1st, 2005, all insecure protocols were discontinued, and secure
client configurations are now required to access all server applications.
Management Information and Network Services requires that all computers use
secure, encrypted protocols for data communication to Barnard Servers. This
includes e-mail (IMAP, POP), file transfer, telnet and uploading web
pages.
The
important information for most users is that Barnard's servers, bc.barnard.edu and
eclipse.barnard.edu,
will accept secure connections only. This means that your mail program is
required to use the SSL ("Secure Sockets Layer") protocol to retrieve your mail,
to transfer files to and from your account and to telnet to your account. If you
updated your email configuration during the email upgrade at the beginning of
October then it is likely that it is already properly configured.
Tips:
Please verify that your incoming server is "bc.barnard.edu" rather than "bc.barnard.columbia.edu"
If you are forwarding your Barnard email to another account, you do not need to take any action.
If in the past you connected to a server via telnet, you now need to use one of the programs listed under Terminal
Your settings are fine if:
you are already using Secure Shell for Pine
you are already using Secure Shell for File Transfer
you are already using WinSCP for File Transfer
