  • Provide training, troubleshooting, guidance in the use of web publishing software.

  • Assist in designing the underlying template for the site.

  • Explain the process of publishing to the Barnard web server.

  • Review options of linking to information within CourseWorks.

  • Train departmental staff re procedures and best practices of publishing and scanning.

The Reference Librarians can assist you with questions about copyright, existing sources of electronic materials and library services. 

 

From Communications:

  • Develops the official "visual identity" for the College. 

  • Provides a link to your page from the Barnard Site Index page.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS 

Servers

WWW = Computer where pages reside when published;  WEB = Staging area for pre-publication viewing.  The departmental web site can be updated from computers on the campus.

URL

Subdirectory where this web site is housed on the WWW server, also the account name (8 characters).

Source files

These are the "working copies" of the pages to be published.  They are located on a specific computer in the department.  For Academic sites, the location of source files is registered with Academic Technologies.

Manager

Person who decides design and content for this page and following pages.  Reviews and approves all changes before they are published. Deals with  pages that contain private or copyrighted material.  Knows web account & password. Knows location of source files and password to that computer.   Generally, a new design and Manager is selected by consensus of the Senior Faculty in the department. 

Designer

Hired by Manager as needed to create initial site or handle redesign of site.

Editor

Person who routinely edits and publishes the pages.   Also creates backup of source code and deletes old pages from WWW server.  Changes are reviewed by the Manager before they are published. 

Backup

Backup person who is available to publish simple emergency changes when Editor is not available.  Because this person needs access to passwords and source files, the backup person is a full time staff member.

Software

The College provides SharePoint (formerly FrontPage) under the campus Microsoft contract.
