Educational Technology offers frequent orientations to CourseWorks, wikis, and related topics at the start of each semester.  Additional sessions can be scheduled as needed at any time of the year.  If you can't attend a scheduled orientation, or if you are interested in having staff from Educational Technology provide a CourseWorks orientation to you or to your class, contact edtech@barnard.edu.

COURSEWORKS: INTRODUCTION

This one-hour orientation to CourseWorks, the course management system at Barnard, covers the basics, including how to login, access your course(s), post a syllabus, post weekly assignments, and send email to the class.  Contact edtech@barnard.edu to arrange a session.

COURSEWORKS: INTERMEDIATE

Thinking of using additional features in CourseWorks? This one-hour session covers CourseWorks discussion forums and tests & quizzes, or selected other features as needed. Contact edtech@barnard.edu to arrange a session.

WIKIS: INTRODUCTION TO COURSE-RELATED WIKIS
A wiki is a program for the shared creating, editing and discussion of interlinked Web pages and documents. This one hours session will demonstrate the basics of a wiki, and introduce Columbia WikiSpaces, a University resource for academic courses.  Contact edtech@barnard.edu to arrange a session.

Tech Talks: Fall 2009

Tech Talks are informal presentations on diverse technology topics. This semester's Tech Talks are being presented by Educational Technology, IT Help Desk, and Barnard Library. Light snacks and drinks are provided. Please send questions, comments, and suggestions to edtech@barnard.edu
 
In fall 2009, Tech Talks take place 12:30-1:30 pm in Lehman 201 from Oct 14th to Nov 18th

Registration is not required to attend, but it is requested so that we can plan more effectively. Use this Registration Form to indicate which Tech Talks you are planning to attend. 

Wed, Oct 14: Use Delicious.com to Organize & Share Web Links
Delicious.com is a very useful browser plug-in that allows you to access your collection of web page bookmarks (aka favorites) from any computer; you can also share them with others, called social bookmarking.  Will also demonstrate how Delicious.com is used in an instructional context.

Wed, Oct 21: PC Notebook Repair & Optimization
Learn how to optimize your system for best performance and to install and run tools for cleaning malware, spyware and viruses from your system.  Bring your notebook PC to the session and try it right away.

Wed, Oct 28: Access Columbia's Resources Using LibX & Firefox
LibX is a Firefox plug-in that lets you easily search both Columbia and Internet resources such as CLIO, full-text online journals subscribed to by Columbia, and Google Scholars.

Wed, Nov 4: About Podcasting
Hear about/span> the various kinds of podcasts, what is needed to create one, and how to make it available to student, colleagues, or the world.  We will record this session and show you how we upload it to iTunes!

Wed, Nov 11: Manage Your Email
This session will help you to better manage your emails and attachments and keep your email under control. Especially recommended if you are often going over your email quota.

Wed, Nov 18: Publish Your Own Web Page
Demonstration of how to create your own personal website at Barnard, including suggestions for making it easier to create and maintain.  Mention will also be made of some laternative ways to create a web presence for yourself.

TOOLS FOR EDITING PHOTOS (June 2009)e 2009)
How to resize, crop, and touch up photos or other images using free, easy-to-use web programs like Picnik.com and Photoshop.com, or using free programs like Picasa.

DOODLE & TWITTER (July 2009)
Doodle is a free and easy-to-use web-based program that helps you find meeting times based on the schedule and preferences of the attendees. Twitter is a social networking and "micro-blogging" tool that is in the news a lot, and is being used by some Barnard departments. Come find out what everyone is tweeting about. bout. GOOGLE DOCS (July 2009)
Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and form application offered by Google. Documents can be shared with others with view-only or full editing privileges, facilitating easy access and collaboration. Link to recording
