SecureShell is built to use secure protocols so all you need to do is use it. If your computer was set up by the Barnard Help Desk then you already have have SSH secure shell installed, otherwise you can download SSH SecureShell for Workstations through eBear by clicking on My Tools and then Downloads or from the ssh website by clicking the link below
http://www.ssh.com/support/downloads/secureshellwks/non-commercial.html.
SecureShell has both telnet and file transfer capabilities and the telnet side is called Secure Shell Client which we'll focus on here. If you need to access PINE email you would use Secure Shell Client.
After you download and install secure shell client, you can login and save your profile for convenience (if your computer was set-up by Barnard Help Desk then your profile has already been saved as either Faculty mail or Student mail)
Start SecureShell Client from the Start-->Programs menu.
1. When the program opens click Quick Connect

2. In the Connect to remote host window type in your host name as follows:
Students: eclipse.barnard.edu
Faculty/Staff: bc.barnard.edu
![]() |
![]() |
3. Type in your password and click OK

4. Once you log in, the Add Profile window will appear for a short time, if you catch it, type a name for this profile and click Add to Profiles, if you miss it you'll get a can add it later.
5. If you missed the Add Profile window, you can bring it up again while you are still logged in by clicking on Profiles -->Add Profile
6. Once you have saved your profile, here I used the name "barnard", you can log in quickly from now on by clicking on Profiles and choosing your profile. (You can save your profile to the Toolbar, find out how using Help.)

7. Once you are logged in you should see your familiar prompt.
