Campus wide
How to avoid a virus
Install Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus Software
as your first line of
defense. This software should be set to update daily and to scan the hard disk
weekly. It is essential that all other anti-virus software be uninstalled correctly BEFORE
installing Norton Anti-Virus. Call the Help Desk (x4-7172) for assistance.
Barnard has a campus-wide site license for Norton AV. It is available for download from:
http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/nav/
Schedule
automatic scans of your pc (at least weekly):

From the Start
menu, click on Programs, than Symantec, then Antivirus Client

Click on
Scheduled Scan on the left side of the Symantec window

Click on New
Scheduled Scan and provide a Name (e.g. Weekly PC Scan) and click Next

Click in the box
next to Enable Scan, then choose a frequency and schedule a time (be sure that
it is a time when your pc will be turned on)
Set up
automatic updates of virus definitions:

From the Start
menu, click on Programs, than Symantec, then Antivirus Client

Click on File on
the top toolbar and choose Scheduled Updates from the drop down menu

In the window
that opens check the box for Enable Scheduled Automatic Updates and click on
Schedule to set up a regular time for the updates (be sure that it is a time
when your pc will be turned on)
