How to avoid a virus

Install Symantec (Norton)  AntiVirus Software as your first line of defense. This software should be set to update daily and to scan the hard disk  weekly. It is essential that all other anti-virus software be uninstalled correctly BEFORE installing Norton Anti-Virus.  Call the Help Desk (x4-7172) for assistance.   Barnard has a campus-wide site license for Norton AV. It is available for download from:  http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/nav/

Schedule automatic scans of your pc (at least weekly):

  • From the Start menu, click on Programs, than Symantec, then Antivirus Client

  • Click on Scheduled Scan on the left side of the Symantec window

  • Click on New Scheduled Scan and provide a Name (e.g. Weekly PC Scan) and click Next

  • Click in the box next to Enable Scan, then choose a frequency and schedule a time (be sure that it is a time when your pc will be turned on)

Set up automatic updates of virus definitions:

  •  From the Start menu, click on Programs, than Symantec, then Antivirus Client

  • Click on File on the top toolbar and choose Scheduled Updates from the drop down menu

  • In the window that opens check the box for Enable Scheduled Automatic Updates and click on Schedule to set up a regular time for the updates (be sure that it is a time when your pc will be turned on)
