Welcome First-Year and Returning Students to Barnard Student Computing!

New Students

Before connecting to the Barnard Network, you must complete the Mandatory Computer Setup.

Please visit the New Student Information page to get acquainted with Barnard Computing Services, learn how to activate and access accounts, and complete important things to do before and after arriving on campus.

Returning Students

BCIT made many improvements over the summer.

Wireless improvements:
There are now only two wireless networks, Barnard Secure and Barnard Guest, respectively serving members of the Barnard community and their guests on campus. To Connect to Barnard Secure, please follow the instructions on the BCIT Internet page. (http://barnard.edu/bcit/access/internet)

gBear improvements:
BCIT is happy to announce that gBear will now offer all of the collaboration tools in Google Apps for Education’s suite, including Docs, Sites, and Groups. For support or training in other applications, you may take advantage of Google’s online help documentation.

Printing improvements:
BCIT created the Printer Availability page so that students may now check the status of any Barnard printer before going to the lab or sending a document to a particular printer.

8/31/12:

First-Year Students! Please sign into gBear and take our First-Year Student Survey on Computing at Barnard. The results of this survey will supply us with vital information regarding students' computing needs and interests as well as with ways that we can provide optimal service.

6/7/11:

BCIT is making improvements to our wireless network. Please carefully review the changes below, as they will affect the way you connect to wireless. There are two new wireless networks, Barnard Secure and Barnard Guest, respectively serving members of the Barnard community and their guests on campus. Read further to learn which network to connect to and how to connect. 

Current faculty, staff, and students should connect to the network named “Barnard Secure,” which will be the only secure network available.  You will still use your Barnard account username and password to authenticate to it.  
Instructions to set up a profile for this network can be found at http://barnard.edu/wireless. 

You may remove old network profiles such as “Barnard Quad” and “Barnard Main Campus."

Members of the Columbia community who are on the Barnard campus may also follow these directions to connect to “Barnard Secure.” However, they should log in with their full Columbia email address and UNI password.

Conference guests, alumnae, parents, and other visitors may connect to the network named “Barnard Guest.”  No special configuration or authentication is required.  This network does not have any encryption or security for the data moving across it, so please advise your guests to use due caution when accessing the Internet with it.

6/1/11:

BCIT is happy to announce that gBear will now offer all of the collaboration tools in Google Apps for Education’s suite, including Docs, Sites, and Groups.  The new apps will appear in the top left hand corner of gBear. If you do not see the changes, sign out and sign back into your account.

BCIT will focus on supporting this core set of Google applications: Mail, Calendar, Talk (Chat), Docs, and Sites. For support or training in other applications, you may take advantage of Google’s online help documentation.

Please note that you may want to make adjustments due to changes resulting from this rollout. For instance, in order to have multiple Google accounts logged in at the same time, you will need to use different browsers or use Google’s multiple sign-in. Also, be aware that you and any other person who has a Google account may show up in each other’s chat lists after engaging in email correspondence.  As a result, you may want to make adjustments to your Chat settings and contact list, i.e., block certain contacts.
