Policy on Deployment and Operation of Network Devices on Barnard College Computer Networks

Effective Date: August 30, 2012
Revision: this policy was last edited on August 30, 2012

Policy Statement
This policy defines when and how network devices (e.g., Ethernet switches, routers, and repeaters) may be deployed and operated on Barnard College’s network.

Executive Summary
Network devices can be deployed and operated only when approved by Barnard's Vice President for IT or her designates.

Reason for the Policy
This policy provides guidelines to situations in which someone other than BCIT personnel deploys and operates a network device on Barnard’s computer network. Introducing unauthorized network devices onto Barnard's computer network is a security risk, which may result in the loss of access to network resources and the Internet for the Barnard computer-using community. Moreover, routing loops can bring part or all of Barnard’s computer network offline.

Who is Governed by This Policy
This policy applies to all individuals on the Barnard College campus.

Statement of Policy
Network devices not authorized by Barnard's Vice President for IT or her designates are not permitted on Barnard’s computer network.

Individuals on the Barnard College campus interested in deploying a network device must submit a request via email to help@barnard.edu. Upon BCIT's confirmation that the network device(s) will be deployed and operated with no adverse impact to Barnard's computer network, Barnard's Vice President for IT or her designates will authorize the requested network device(s).

Enforcement
BCIT will remove all unauthorized network devices from Barnard’s computer network. If BCIT is able to determine the owner of the unauthorized network device, then BCIT will return the network device to the owner. Otherwise, BCIT will store the unauthorized network device at the BCIT Service Desk until it is claimed by the owner.
