Policy on Deployment and Operation of Wireless Access Points on Barnard College Computer Networks

Effective Date: June 25, 2012
Revision: this policy was last edited on June 25, 2012

Policy Statement
This policy defines when and how wireless access points (AP) can be deployed and operated on Barnard College’s wireless network.

Executive Summary
Wireless access points may be deployed and operated only when approved by Barnard's Vice President for IT or her designates.

Reason for the Policy
This policy provides guidelines to prevent network interference, which affects the Barnard community’s network access, and seeks to prevent situations when individuals other than BCIT’s personnel deploy and operate a wireless AP.

Who is Governed by This Policy
This policy applies to all individuals on the Barnard College campus. This includes, but is not limited to faculty, staff, students, those working on behalf of the College and individuals authorized by affiliated institutions and organizations.

Statement of Policy
Unauthorized APs are not permitted on Barnard networks. Only Barnard's Vice President for IT or her designates are authorized to determine if an area may contain a non-Barnard wireless AP and that the device is configured appropriately.

Individuals on the Barnard College campus interested in deploying and operating an AP must submit a request via email to help@barnard.edu. BCIT’s networking team will review the request, ensuring that the AP can be deployed and operated in a specific location under a very specific configuration, and that there will be no adverse impact to Barnard’s computer networks.

Enforcement
If an unauthorized AP is found on any Barnard network, it will be removed from the network and returned to the owner of the device. If the owner is not known, the device will be brought to the IT Service Desk until claimed by the owner.
