Sistas on the Rise emerged out of the need to create a space for young women (particularly young mothers) of color to participate and make their voices heard in social and economic justice work. The young women are all low-income living in the South Bronx. Their ethnicity is mostly Latina and African-American. The average age is 13-18. We realize that many young women who become pregnant drop out of existing youth programs because they do not receive the support necessary for their continued participation. We also acknowledge that young women of color in general need a safe space to develop their leadership skills, socio-political analysis and organize without being marginalized.
