MICROBIOLOGY: TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
The Department of Biological Sciences at Barnard College , Columbia University , seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor (starting July 2009) to participate in undergraduate teaching and establish an active, externally funded research program that investigates any aspect of the biology of microbes. Teaching responsibilities include advanced lecture and laboratory courses in microbial diversity, participation in the Introductory Biology sequence, and organization of a senior seminar in an area of interest to the successful candidate. Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience is required; teaching experience is desirable.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences (Neuroscience)

LABORATORY SPECIALIST, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
The Department of Biological Sciences at Barnard College , Columbia University seeks a full-time Laboratory Specialist. During the academic year, the individual will teach introductory biology laboratory courses, assist with an upper-level laboratory course, and oversee the department's facilities and equipment. During the summer, Laboratory Specialist will collaborate with faculty on research projects. Barnard College offers a generous benefits package including tuition assistance.
Responsibilities include:
- teach two introductory biology laboratory sections each semester
- assist with set up for introductory biology laboratories
- hold office hours for introductory biology students
- assist faculty with one upper level laboratory course each year
- conduct research during the summer under the supervision of a Barnard faculty member
- oversee the confocal and digital microscope laboratories
- coordinate waste disposal, chemical safety, and fire safety
- oversee maintenance of equipment and laboratory facilities
Qualifications:
We require a Bachelor's Degree in Biology or a related field. Prior experience in teaching, microscopy, and/or molecular biology research is strongly preferred. Also required are strong written and oral communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with autonomy.

Teaching Assistants
Teaching Assistants are needed for Introductory Biology Courses BC1001 and BC2003. Responsibilities include assisting students during lab time and attending a one-hour preparation meeting on Friday afternoons. Student Assistants
Student Assistants (both work-study and non-work study) are needed to assist the Director of Introductory Biology Labs with the set-up and clean-up of weekly lab courses. Tasks include but are not limited to the cleaning of glassware, making of solutions, and preparation of culture plates. Students majoring in biology or a related field are preferred, but applicants with other majors are also invited to apply. Flexible hours.
