Faculty Positions

Adjunct Assistant Professor, Lab in Molecular Biology

Barnard College is seeking an individual to teach a Laboratory in Molecular Biology course during the Spring 2010 semester. This lab course covers basic techniques in molecular biology at the junior/senior level; previous manuals and procedures are available. Applicants are expected to have acquired a Ph.D. prior to January 2010 and teaching experience at the college level is desirable. Barnard is a liberal arts college for women affiliated with Columbia University in New York .

Job Descriptions for the Biology Department

Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SI): are students that hold structured study groups sessions and review lecture material covered in BC 1500 and BC 1502. Leaders must have successfully passed these courses and must attend a mandatory SI training session in the summer. The SI Leader must attend all morning lectures affiliated with BC 1500 and BC 1502, they must hold 3 hourly SI sessions a week, and 1 hour of office hours each week. SI Leaders are hired for an entire academic term.

Student Lab Assistant for Introductory Biology : Set up and break down of labs, cleaning lab-ware
(test tubes, beakers etc.), cleaning in general, labeling things, errands to Morton Williams, and light office work (photocopying, making simple spreadsheets). Minimum 3 hours a week. Fridays from 12:30pm-4:00pm are preferred- but all days are available- Monday – Friday 8:30am- 5:30pm. Daily and weekly instructions will be given. No experience is necessary; however, good work ethic and strong sense of responsibility are musts! (up to 8 students needed)      

Student Planter : Intro labs need a lot of plants planted and watered. Minimum 3 hours a week. Setting up soil in pots. Planting seeds, watering, fertilizing, disposing of used plants and clean-up. More specific instructions will be given on a weekly basis. No experience is necessary; however, good work ethic and strong sense of responsibility are musts! (1 student needed)

Sterile Nutrient Petri Dish Plate Pourer: as the title suggests, making media, sterilizing it, pouring it into dishes, clean-up, storage, and sterilization at the end of usage. You will be trained. Minimum 3 hours a week. Preferred 1 hour on Tuesdays, 2-3 hours Wednesday mornings, lunch break, and then 2-3 hours Wednesday   afternoon. Weekly instructions will be given. Some experience preferred. (2 students needed)

Intro Bio Lab TAs : For courses BC1001/1002- prerequisite: students must have taken BC 1001 and/or BC 1501/BC 1503 and received a grade of B or better. 5-7 positions are available depending on course enrollment.


Intro Bio Lab TAs : For courses BC1501/1503- prerequisite:   students must have taken BC 1501 and BC 1503 with a grade of B or better. 10-14 positions available depending on course enrollment.

Greenhouse Assistant : Do maintenance of plants and the greenhouse rooms which include: removing yellow leaves, dead flowers, watering and misting, sweeping and washing greenhouse floors, transplanting small plants as well as big trees from our collection, do fertilization,  assist with transporting plants to the classrooms. 

Biology and environmental science majors preferred, but we also hire plant lovers with different majors. The training is provided.

We accept students who offer to work at least two times a week 2-3 hours each time. It might be in the morning between 9-12pm or in the afternoon from 1-4 pm. After the training we may offer work during the weekend: only 1 hour in the morning.

Office Assistant: Maintaining budget items – purchased equipment, petty cash, AMEX on Excel, preparation for department events, copying, photographing, editing, filing and organizing paper work for department searches. Responsibilities include running errands to local stores and other academic and administrative offices. In some cases, the student is assigned a particular position e.g. payroll- filing time sheets, contracts and maintaining an excel spread sheet that can be reconciled with the department budget.

Upper Level Teaching Assistant: Student who has already completed an upper-level course and will assist in upper level labs by teaching and preparing the lab set ups. Upper level labs are held from 1-6pm and Teaching Assistant must be present.

Lecture Teaching Assistant: Student has to attend all classes and be available to students for 3-4 hours weekly for help sessions.

Insect Caretaker: Student must maintain – feed, clean cages, transfer Manduca (tobacco hornworms) in Professor Glendinning's Lab.
