Research Courses in Biology

Below are listed 3 main options for students who want to conduct research within the Biology curriculum. Before signing up for any research course you should examine the checklist for that course to make sure that everything is arranged properly. The checklist for a course can be obtained by clicking on the text describing that course as an option.

In addition, all research courses require Department Approval. To obtain this complete the Project Approval Form which can be downloaded HERE and submit it at the Biology Office during the limited enrollment course signup period.

Option 1 - For degree credit. If you simply want to work in a lab during the academic year and get credit for your work then you can take BIOL BC3597. This course has no seminar component and you are not required to give a presentation on your work. It cannot be used towards towards the Biology major.

Option 2 - In lieu of an Upper Level Lab. If you want to use research to replace one of the three upper level labs required for the Biology Major then you should take the Guided Research and Seminar sequence: BIOL BC3591-3592 (Fall-Spring).

Option 3 - In lieu of Senior Seminar. If you want to use research to replace the Senior Seminar requirement for the Biology Major then you should take the Senior Thesis Research sequence: BIOL BC3593-3594 (Fall-Spring).
