INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY:
IS BIOL BC1001 or BC1500/01 THE RIGHT COURSE FOR YOU?

The Biology department offers 1000-level and 1500-level Introductory Biology sequences.

  • The 1000 series is intended for non-majors and for less experienced biologists. This semester, Prof. Shepard teaches BIOL BC1001 (Revolutionary Concepts in Biology).
  • The 1500 series is targeted at prospective biology majors and pre-meds, although non-majors are certainly welcome. This semester, Prof. Hertz teaches BIOL BC1500 (Introduction to Organismal and Evolutionary Biology).

Scored 4 or 5 on AP Bio Exam

DO NOT take BC 1001. You've received credit for this course already. Take BC 1002 (only taught in the spring).

DO NOT take BC 1001. You've received credit for this course already. Take BC 1500/01 and BC 1502/03. You can start with either.

Scored 3 on AP Bio Exam, 600+ on SAT II Bio, or had more than 1 course in Biology or related science

 

Your choice:

•  Take BC 1001, then BC 1002.

•  Consider skipping the 1000 level courses and take BC 1500/01 and BC 1502/3. You can start with either.

Consider skipping the 1000 level courses and take BC 1500/1501 and BC 1502/1503. You can start with either.

No or little experience with Biology

Take BC 1001, then BC 1002. BC1001 is only taught in the fall and is a pre-requisite for BC1002 (taught in the spring).

Take BC 1001, then continue on to the 1500 level courses. BC1001 is only taught in the fall.
