“Translation is a complex issue, and retranslation doubly so,” writes Mark Harman. How do translators approach the task of translating works that have been previously translated? On the basis of their work as scholars and translators of some truly formidable works of literature, the invited speakers discuss the complexities of (re)translations. Participants include Mark Harman, translator of Kafka’s Amerika: The Missing Person and The Castle; Richard Howard, whose version of Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal won the American Book Award in Translation; and Royall Tyler, only the third person to translate into English the whole of Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji.
