Due to the storm, Barnard College closed at 4pm Friday, for non-essential personnel. “Essential personnel" include staff in Facilities, Public Safety and Residence Halls.
Friday evening and weekend classes are cancelled but events are going forward as planned unless otherwise noted. The Athena Film Festival programs are also scheduled to go forward as planned but please check http://athenafilmfestival.com/ for the latest information.
The Barnard Library and Archives closed at 4pm Friday and will remain closed on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Library will resume regular hours on Sunday opening at 10am.

On the first night of the first ever Athena Film Festival, I was sitting in the dimly lit Diana Oval waiting for the screening of “Desert Flower,” a movie about nomad-turned-supermodel Waris Dirie, to begin. The last flickers of light died down and the screen lit up. Talking ceased as a pre-feature clip sang out: “I will not be afraid of women...”

Students from around Johannesburg participated in 2011 Young Women's Leadership Workshop, under the direction of six Barnard students.

Born or bred, women leaders still remain less the rule than the exception, commanding our curiosity and attention. What brought them to the pinnacle of their professions? Intense focus, the guidance of an enlightened mentor, networks of other professionals, sheer ambition combined with a sharp intellect, a talent for taking chances, or all of the above? In conjunction with the launch of The Athena Center for Leadership Studies, we asked five outstanding alumnae leaders in a variety of professions about their careers, leadership styles, and shortlists of leadership requirements.
