About Career Development

Career Development is committed to teaching you the skills needed to make career decisions over a lifetime and to facilitating internships, employment, and postgraduate opportunities. By utilizing our programs and services, you will learn to incorporate a multifaceted approach to your career development.

Career Development provides career counseling and programming to assist students and alumnae in translating their liberal arts education into the language of the workplace. The office assists students with searches for full-time and part-time jobs, internships, student employment, and graduate school counseling in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Studies. Extensive resources include a career library, and a variety of self-assessment counseling tools that are available for career research. Career Development facilitates recruitment through a variety of organizations, and annual career fairs to connect students with employers.

Ultimately you are responsible for your own career direction decision-making.  Career Development is excited to partner with you in this ongoing process.  We strongly encourage you to start earlier in your college career, and develop a four-year plan to achieve your success.

Career Development will help you to:

  • Define your career goals(s)
  • Learn your unique values, interests, skills, and abilities
  • Develop the skills to secure a job or internship
  • Identify and define your transferable skills and how to market them
  • Understand that the educational experience takes place inside and outside class

Career Development hosts the Student Employment Program, which includes federal work study and all on-campus jobs, and advises the student-managed Barnard Babysitting and Bartending agencies.

For both interviews and other pre-professional meetings, students can borrow business attire through the “Suitable Suits Program.” Additionally, the office develops programming for the New York City Civic Engagement Program. Alumnae participate in a variety of career information sessions and are available to coach and mentor students. A monthly newsletter is sent to all students advertising career panels, workshops, and opportunities.
