Weather Update

Due to the storm, Barnard College closed at 4pm Friday, for non-essential personnel. “Essential personnel" include staff in Facilities, Public Safety and Residence Halls.  

Friday evening and weekend classes are cancelled but events are going forward as planned unless otherwise noted. The Athena Film Festival programs are also scheduled to go forward as planned but please check http://athenafilmfestival.com/ for the latest information. 

The Barnard Library and Archives closed at 4pm Friday and will remain closed on Saturday, Feb. 9.  The Library will resume regular hours on Sunday opening at 10am.  

Please be advised that due to the conditions, certain entrances to campus may be closed.  The main gate at 117th Street & Broadway will remain open.  For further updates on college operations, please check this website, call the College Emergency Information Line 212-854-1002 or check AM radio station 1010WINS.

Selection Criteria, Grantee Requirements and Supervisor Responsibilities

Grantee Selection Criteria

The application review committee will consider the following criteria in selecting grantees:

  1. Connection of Internship to Student's Career Development
  2. Presentation of Application Materials (Quality of Résumé (1 page), Essay and Internship Descriptions)
  3. Academic Standing
  4. Availability of Specific Funding

Grantee Requirements

Hours

Students are expected to intern for a minimum of 6 hours per week for an academic year internship.  Students are also expected to engage in a minimum of 60 hours of supervised work in total or to hold internship positions for a minimum duration of two months during the academic year. 

Students are expected to intern for a minimum of 200 hours of supervised work in total for a summer internship.  Students working fewer hours may receive smaller grants than those working more hours.

Program Agreement

The grantee, the internship supervisor, and Barnard Career Development will sign a program agreement pertaining to the parties’ respective responsibilities with regards to the Internship Grant Program.  A sample copy of the Program Agreement is available here.

Thank You Note

All grantees are required to write a “thank you” note to each of their donors.

Participation in an Online Community

All grantees will be required to participate in an online community that will allow the Career Development office to communicate with all grantees, hold online discussion forums, and track deadlines and events.  Career Development staff will post topics weekly and each grantee will be expected to reply to each thread.

Internship Learning Action Plan

All grantees will be required to submit an Internship Learning Action Plan that has been reviewed and signed by her internship supervisor.

Professional Development Event

All grantees will be required to attend one other professional development event of her choosing—on campus or off campus—and submit a 250-word narrative reflection (possibly for donor consumption).

Presentation

Grantees may be required to prepare a presentation about her internship experience for the Internship Grant Program Reception.

Torchbearer’s Reception

Grantees may be required to attend the annual Torchbearer’s Reception.  Students are only invited to attend if their donor will be in attendance. The Development office handles these invitations.

Evaluation

Each grantee will be expected to fill out an online evaluation about her experience with the program and her internship experience.

Internship Supervisor Responsibilities

The grantees’ internship supervisors will be asked by Career Development to complete the following:

Program Agreement

Hours

The internship supervisor will assist in tracking the grantee’s internship hours either by utilizing the Timesheet X system or by signing requested documentation from Barnard Career Development.

Internship Learning Action Plan

The internship supervisor will review and sign the grantee’s Internship Learning Action Plan.

Intern Performance Evaluation

The internship supervisor will be asked to complete an online performance evaluation for the grantee and conduct an exit interview with the grantee to discuss the evaluation.
