1990-1991 Centennial Scholars

Karen Coombs wrote a historical novella entitled "Fear and Communion" based on the Spanish Inquisition. Her novella focused on Tomas DeTorquemada, The Grand Inquisitor. For her presentation she read from her novel.

Sarah Garvey from Princeton High School explored American history and culture in her photo-essay, "What is 'Americana'? Is there an indigenous American culture?" Her photo-essay looked at literature and politics from the past and how they continue to shape our society today. She was on a quest for the Spirit of America.

Gina Gionfriddo gave a reading from her play "Stations of the Cross," which was about coming of age in academia. To prepare for writing her play she took courses in dramatic writing, interned at an Off-Boadway theatre company, and read plays extensively.

Ruth Magder presented "The Vision of Miriam: Stories of Jewish Women from the Biblical Period to the Modern Era." She researched scriptures and modern sources and read original stories based on oral interviews. The collection of stories was performed in traditional folkloric style.

Naomi Stotland developed a video and lecture for HIV peer education. She worked in conjunction with Health Services to create "A Model for College Peer HIV Education."

Katherine Zilla from Milton Academy traveled to Czechoslovakia to research her project on dissident exile literature of Eastern Europe. She focused on Czechoslovakian writers who were members of Charte 77, such as Vaclav Havel.
