1993-1994 Centennial Scholars

Alaunde Copley-Woods held a flute recital that integrated skills and musical ideas she has developed during her college career. The pieces presented were by Bach, Berio, Sequenza, Jolivet, and Prokoleiu and represent different time periods and styles. They were performed by solo flute and with chamber group accompaniment.

Jennifer Girotti created a project that explored ecofeminism and included a recounting of her work on a farm run by women in Ohio. Jennifer included the history and philosophy of ecofeminism with its various strands, related her personal experience with ecofeminism and discussed various ceremonies and rituals that relate to ecofeminism.

Idana Goldberg interviewed women in Israel who fought in the war of Independence in 1948 about their experiences as women taking part in a national struggle for Israeli statehood. For her presentation, Idana created an exhibit combining photographs she took of the women with excerpts from these women's stories.

Vanthanh Ly's project involves the biochemistry of pigments found in Goldenrod seed embryos. She extracted the pigments from the embryos themselves and chemically identified them. For her presentation, Vanthanh will give a scientific talk using slides.

Lei Meng's project involves biomimetic chemistry, where synthetic molecules are created to imitate the behavior of natural enzymes in the body during the catalytic process. Lei will give a scientific talk using an overhead projector.

Catherine Moller filmed a short video on women working in informal business ventures in urban Zimbabwe from her six months experience there, from January to July 1993. She presented this video and held a discussion afterward.

Suzanne Oshinsky explored creative expression in writing and dance. She attended two intensive modern technique classes and explored, through various workshops, as well as private sessions with Amy Guggenheim, different forms of creative dance including spontaneous movement, contact improvisation, structured improvisation, and choreography. In conjunction with her dancing experience Suzanne worked on an extensive piece of writing about this experience including the fluctuating emotional states which dancing induces. For her presentation she read selections from this autobiographical narrative and performed a choreographed piece, an ensemble improvisation involving contact and structured improvisation.

Sasha Soreff's piece was about her experience dancing at the North Carolina School of the Arts and her travels in Africa -- experiences she used to develop a dance class. This past fall, Sasha taught a dance class with junior high school girls who came to Barnard for academic tutoring. The class's purpose was to encourage the students to feel comfortable dancing and exploring another means of expression. Her performance piece used voice and movement to examine Sasha's relationship with dance as a student and as a teacher.

Leigh Shulman's project is a written journal of a trip she took across the United States. Along the way, she visited many Native American reservations and people. For her presentation, she will read from this journal and lead a discussion afterwards.

Jen Sundick wrote a series of essays on the Jew in Germany today. An outgrowth of her research in Germany, Jen gave a slide presentation and read from her own work on the topic of Jews in Germany. She also had other people read some of the oral histories she had collected.
