LAB 2 - RECRYSTALLIZATION

LAB2 - RECRYSTALLIZATION OVERVIEW:

(Full text)

1. Test the solubility of standard triphenylmethane in methanol, water, and toluene.

2. Dissolve a known amount of the impure triphenylmethane in the minimum amount of hot suitable solvent.

3. Add norite to remove colored impurities.

4. Do hot filtration to remove norite and the insoluble impurities.

5. Concentrate this solution using take off tube.

6. Cool the solution until crystals form and then further cool it in ice.

7. Vacuum filter the recrystallized triphenylmethane.

8. Weigh recrystallized triphenylmethane.

9. Determine the melting points of impure, recrystallized, and standard triphenylmethane and compare the melting points.

PLEASE WATCH THE SAFETY VIDEO AND READ
