LAB 3 - EXTRACTION OVERVIEW: 1. Take a known amount of the unknown mixture in a 100 ml beaker and dissolve it in 20 ml of ethyl acetate. 2. Transfer this solution to a separatory funnel, rinsing the beaker twice with 10 ml portions of ethyl acetate. 3. Extract this solution with 10 ml portions of 1.5 MNaOH solution. Wash the organic layer with water. Combine all the aqueous layers in a beaker labeled "Aqueous layer". 4. Dry the organic layer with Brine and then over anhydrous Sodium Sulfate. 5. Filter the dried organic layer into a pre-weighed RB flask and remove the solvent using rotovap. 6. Determine the weight and melting point of the solid left after rotovap. 7. Aqueous layer: add concentrated HCl until the acid component has completely precipitated. 8. Extract this with 30 ml of ethyl acetate. 9. Dry the organic layer with Brine and then over anhydrous Sodium Sulfate. 10. Filter the dried organic layer into a pre-weighed RB flask and remove the solvent by rotovap. 11. Determine the weight and melting point of the solid left over after rotovap. Go to Rotovap Page for instructions on how to use the rotovap apparatus. 12. Identify the components by comparing the determined melting points to those in your table of physical constants.
