LAB 8 - DEHYDRATION OF 2-METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL

LAB 8-DEHYDRATION OVERVIEW:

(Full text)

1. Take phosphoric acid and 2-methylcyclohexanol in a 5 mL RB flask. Heat and distill the mixture to the conditions specified in the procedure.

2. Cool the flask and add o-xylene.

3. Distill until the conditions specified in the procedure.

4. Dry the product mixture first by extracting with brine and then adding anhydrous potassium carbonate.

5. Distill the dried product using a clean set of apparatus until the conditions specified in the procedure.

6. Perform the following two tests for unsaturation on 2-methylcyclohexanol, cyclohexane, cyclohexene and o-xylene.

    1. Bromine test
    2. Baeyer test
