INTRODUCTORY ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ROTOVAP |

ROTOVAP OVERVIEW: 1. Add distilled water and ice to the pump. 2. Add distilled water to the water bath. 3. Add iso-propanol to the condenser, and then add dry ice to it. 4. Turn the power switch of both the rotovap and the pump on. 5. Make sure that the vacuum valve (stopcock in the up position) at the top of the condenser is in the open position. 6. Attach the RB flask, which has the solution to be rotovaped, to the bump trap using a Keck clip. 7. Start the rotation of the flask slowly. Guard the RB flask with one hand so that it does not fall into the water bath since there is no vacuum yet to hold it. 8. Slowly turn the stopcock (down) on the condenser so that the system is now under vacuum. 9. Gradually increase the rotation speed and lower the flask into the water bath so that it is slightly inside water. 10. Decrease the vacuum, if the solution inside the flask bubbles vigorously. 11. Rotovap till all of the solvent is removed. 12. Raise the flask from the water bath. 13. Turn the vacuum stopcock (up) slowly to release vacuum from the system. 14. Turn the rotation dial back to zero and stop the rotation. Remove the flask. 15. Bring the stopcock down and turn off the pump. (Do not have to do this step if another student is waiting to use the rotovap). 16. Remove the bump trap and clean it with acetone and reattach it. 17. Take out the solvent collecting flask and empty the contents into the appropriate waste container. Attach it back to the rotovap. 18. Turn the power switch on the rotovap off.
