Print-Production Process: Some of the Basics

 

It’s important to start by estimating Turnaround Time.
Consider when (and how) a communication should reach its audience to determine the lead time needed to produce a piece. The timing of production is routinely underestimated: it can take one week to many weeks, depending on the complexity of the project.

Please consult with Production Director Lisa Buonaiuto to estimate the turnaround time for your project. You will find her at extension 4-7522 or at lbuonaiuto@barnard.edu.

 

Taking the time to answer several key questions up front will help improve the effectiveness of your communication.

 

A designer—often Creative Director David Hopson—will recommend a design to fit your objective as well as your budget.
This (creative development) phase is an opportunity to reflect the College’s positioning work and refreshed visual identity.

 

In order to ensure the success of your communication, Lisa Buonaiuto will assist you in following the basic production steps for your piece:

1. PRINTING
Based on both your budget and the purpose of the communications, the piece may be printed on campus (Document Services) or with an outside vendor.

2. QUANTITY
It can be costly to put a project back on press if you discover you need more. It is suggested that you order roughly 10% extra, especially if you have additional processes such as mailing.

3. QUOTES
Costs associated with design, printing, and mailing must be estimated before a piece is put into production to ensure the work falls within your budget.

An approved quote will initiate the process of obtaining a purchase order; please note that Barnard Purchasing requires you secure a P.O. before work can be released to the printer/vendor.

4. PROOFING
It¹s important for you to proof your communication thoroughly before it is sent to the printer. Once a piece has been released, each revision to text costs time and money: printers will charge each time they produce a new proof.

5. FULFILLMENT
If your piece is being mailed, a mail distribution house will work with your mailing list in order to address, sort, affix postage to and deliver your piece to the post office.
