DEGREE REQUIRMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN DANCE
 
Majors must fulfill an 11 course requirement to include BC 3591 Senior Seminar in Dance, one course in dance history (BC 2565 or BC 2566), one in movement science (BC 2501, BC 2561, or BC 2562), one in dance composition (BC 2563, BC 2564 or BC 3565), and one with a significant writing component (BC 2570, BC 3570, BC 3574, BC 3576 or BC 3577). Majors normally take two technique courses per semester: a minimum of eight points of dance technique courses are required. Under the supervision of the dance faculty, seniors are expected to present a final thesis to demonstrate their acquired skill and knowledge of dance. The thesis may be in written form or in performance. Research papers should be 25-30 pages in length. For the performance requirement, a student can present in one of the following two categories: (1) in repertory and (2) in her own choreography. Students may elect to fulfill the thesis requiement by taking either BC 3592 or BC 3593 as part of the 11 course requirement. The remaining courses for the major may be selected from the following:

Under the supervision of the dance faculty, seniors are expected to present a senior thesis to demonstrate their acquired skill and knowledge of dance. Research papers should be 25-30 pages in length and are generally a continuation of topics researched in BC 3591 Senior Seminar in Dance. For the performance requirement, a student must complete work in the following two categories:1.) repertory and 2.) presentation of their own choreography. Students may elect BC 3592 or BC 3593 as part of the 11 course requirement.
 
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN DANCE
 
Six courses constitute a minor in Dance. Normally, three history/criticism and three credit-bearing performance/choreography courses are taken. Courses are to be selected on the basis of consultation with the department chair.

Columbia College students who major in dance are advised to begin course work in the first year with a request to major in dance to be submitted for faculty approval at the end of their second year. At that time, consultation with a Columbia faculty academic adviser is necessary, and a major adviser at Barnard is selected. Majors must fulfill a 42 point course requirement within the Barnard College Department of Dance. The eleven course requirement includes BC 3591 Senior Seminar in Dance, one course in dance history (BC 2565 or BC 2566), one in movement science (BC 2561 or BC 2562), one in dance composition (BC 2563 or BC 2564), and one course with a significant writing component (BC 2570, BC 3567, BC 3570, BC 3574, BC 3576 or BC 3577). Majors normally select the remaining 8 points from (1-point) technique course offerings (two of these courses may fulfill the physical education requirement). Courses for the major may be selected from the following:

SCHOOL OF GENERAL STUDIES UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CONCENTRATION IN DANCE
 
A School of General Studies student who concentrates in dance should take at least six courses in the Dance Department: two core courses (6 points), two in areas of history and criticism (6 points), two in performance and choreography (6 points), with Senior Seminar in Dance (4 points) highly recommended, for a total of 22 points. A total of eight 1-point technique courses is normally undertaken. Courses are to be selected on the basis of consultation with the department chair.
