Message from the Prelaw Dean:
Barnard students who are interested in a career in law are welcome to seek the advice of the pre-law adviser, Dean Christina Kuan Tsu, no later than their junior year at Barnard. Alumnae who wish to pursue legal study also are encouraged to meet with the prelaw dean in the Office of the Dean of Studies.
The office maintains a collection of law school catalogues, guides, and other resource materials about legal education and practice. Each semester the prelaw dean holds an informational meeting. Every fall, there is an on-campus law fair, co-sponsored with the Columbia University Pre-Professional Office and the Dean of Students Office of the School of General Studies, where between 50 and 70 law schools are present to speak with students and alumnae who are interested in attending law school. There are also many law-related programs planned throughout the year. Students are encouraged to read through the prelaw packet and prelaw advising documents. Additionally, in order to receive notification of prelaw programs, students are encouraged to join the prelaw listserv by contacting Paula Hercules, the Pre-Professional Assistant, at phercule@barnard.edu and to open a pre-law file in the Office of the Dean of Studies.
Students who are interested in the opportunity to meet other students at Barnard with an interest in the legal profession may wish to join the Athena Prelaw Society: http://eclipse.barnard.edu/~apls/.
I look forward to getting to know many of you. Do not hesitate to meet with me whether or not you have decided to apply to law school. I am happy to speak with you as you explore a possible interest in a legal career. To make an appointment with me, please visit the Meet with the Deans section of our website.
