ABSOLUTELY FIRM DEADLINE FOR WITHDRAWING FROM COURSES
AND/OR UTILIZING THE PASS/D/FAIL OPTION is Thursday, November 13. The Registrar's Office closes at 4:30pm. Please remember that full-time (12 points) enrollment is required. Exceptions are permitted by Class Deans only for extraordinary, compelling reasons.
ADVANCE PROGRAM FILING FOR 2009 SPRING SEMESTER: The deadline for filing is Tuesday, November 25. Please plan to discuss your course selections with your adviser in a timely way.

NYC CIVIC ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM: Questions about the curricular and co-curricular offerings from NYCCEP, including "Theorizing Civic Engagement", a 4-point course offered through Urban Studies that combines a critical analysis of trends in American civic participation with fieldwork placements, as well as events and seminars offered throughout the year, should be directed to Will Simpkins at wsimpkin@barnard.edu or 212-854-4214.
IMPORTANT MEETING FOR ALL PREHEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS: If you are a junior or senior who is planning to apply to a health professions school-- medical (both M.D. and D.O.), dental, veterinary, optometry, physical/occupational therapy, nursing, or physician's assistant-- in the summer of 2009 (for admission in 2010), you must attend the Prehealth Procedural Meeting on Wednesday, November 19, 6-8pm, in the James Room. Information crucial to the application process will be discussed by Deans Adjua Starks and Ani Bournoutian, and important forms will be distributed. If you are planning on applying in summer 2009 and cannot attend the meeting due to a class conflict, please email your name and year to Paula Hercules, the Preprofessional Assistant, at phercule@barnard.edu.
STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT STUDYING ABROAD IN 2009-2010 (Fall 2009, Spring 2010, or academic year): Please come to the last fall information session to be conducted by Dean Young on Wednesday, November 12, 5:30-6:30pm, in the Held Auditorium (304 Barnard).
STUDENTS WHO WILL BE ON STUDY LEAVES IN THE SPRING: Please complete the appropriate study leave forms and submit them to Dean Young by Monday, November 24. If you have not heard from your chosen program or institution by the 24th, you may have an extension of this deadline. Please be sure to secure all other approvals (including Financial Aid clearance) before requesting Dean Young’s signature. These forms can also be printed from our website at www.barnard.edu/dos/study_abroad. Follow the link to “Before Leaving”. Your Barnard bill cannot be updated until we receive these completed forms.
DAVID L. BOREN NSEP SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION: The on-campus deadline for complete applications for study abroad in Summer 2009, Fall 2009, and Spring 2010 is Monday, December 8, at 4pm. This scholarship is for U.S. citizens to study world regions “critical to U.S. interests.” Language acquisition is a primary goal of the program. All fields of study are eligible. Students studying non-romance languages, even those not taught at Barnard-Columbia, are strongly encouraged to apply. Visit www.borenawards.org.
OXFORD, ENGLAND: Students interested in studying at St. Peter's College, Oxford, for the academic year 2009-2010 may obtain applications in 105 Milbank. Completed applications (to be submitted to Dean Young) are due Monday, December 8, 2008, at 4pm. 2009 HARRY S. TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP: The process of selecting candidates will begin soon. The Truman Foundation is seeking juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the non-profit or advocacy sectors, education, or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation provides significant financial support for graduate study and leadership training. If you are interested in being considered for a College nomination, please call the Dean of Studies Office (212-854-2024) to schedule a meeting with Dean Runsdorf at your earliest convenience.
THE BEINECKE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM generously funds graduate school study for highly motivated juniors who are US citizens and on financial aid and who are interested in pursuing graduate school in the humanities, social sciences, or the arts. The College may submit one nominee for consideration. Please call the Dean of Studies Office to schedule an appointment with Dean Runsdorf.
LISTENING HOURS OPEN: The Furman Counseling Center is offering evening residence hall walk-in sessions. No appointment necessary. Whether election season politics have got you worried, or academic and competitive pressures are stressing you out, or you are new to Barnard and New York and feel lost, or need a place to talk out roommate or relationship issues, or financial concerns are weighing on you, or you just don’t know what’s bothering you but you think something is. Drop by one of our Listening Hours and we’ll help you sort it out. Listening Hours are open to all Barnard students. They are held on Tuesdays in Plimpton Hall, 7-9:30pm, and Thursdays in Elliott Hall, 7-9:30pm.
