Other Academic Opportunities Study at the Manhattan School of Music

The Admission Offices for Barnard and the Manhattan School of Music (MSM) have worked together to refer interested incoming students to appropriate MSM faculty members. Other students should contact Professor Gail Archer, 319 Milbank Hall, x45096. Music lessons at MSM earn two points of degree credit and, following approval by Professor Archer, must be listed on a Barnard student's program. Because of offerings at Barnard, students may take voice lessons here, not at MSM.

Dual degree in Engineering

Barnard is one of nearly 100 institutions participating in the Fu School of Engineering and Applied Science 3-2 Program, in which students earn both a B.A. from their home institution and a Bachelor of Science from the Engineering School. Requirements for admission include completion of designated science and mathematics courses, a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.0 with grades of B or better in the pertinent undergraduate courses, the recommendation of Dean Blank as the Combined Plan adviser, and the completion of 90 points taken as a matriculated Barnard student. (30 points, assuming Barnard approval, taken during the two years of enrollment at FUSEAS will then be applied toward the 120 required for the Barnard degree.) The application deadline is January 1 of the junior year. Please meet with Dean Blank as soon as you think that you are interested in the Program. She will review the required courses and application procedures with you and direct you to currently-enrolled Barnard students who can speak with you about the Program from their perspective. For students who wish to pursue engineering while also developing a strong liberal arts foundation, this Program is terrific.

Five-year program in International or Public Affairs

Barnard College and the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs offer a joint program leading to the A.B. degree at the end of four years and the Master of International Affairs or Master of Public Affairs after one additional year. Application to this program is made through the Office of the Dean of Studies in the junior year, but to ensure appropriate guidance and preparation, consultation is recommended in the sophomore year with Dean Runsdorf. Qualified students nominated by the Office of the Dean of Studies complete the application, which is sent to the School of International and Public Affairs. Finalists will be interviewed by an admissions officer at SIPA. The final decision on admission rests with the SIPA Review Committee. Acceptance to the joint program is a provisional admission to SIPA for the undergraduate degree. All provisionally admitted students will be required to submit a formal application to SIPA in the spring semester of the senior year.

Study at the Jewish Theological Seminary

Barnard students may enroll in the Albert A. List College at JTS to pursue a second bachelor's degree (as part of our Double Degree Program), to attend for a semester on study leave, or simply to take courses not offered at Columbia or Barnard. Students interested in such coursework should consult Dean Link about procedures.

Joint program in music with Juilliard

Barnard students who pass the Juilliard audition may enroll in a course of instrumental instruction at Juilliard with a regular member of the Juilliard faculty. (A qualified Barnard non-Music major or minor may take as many as six such courses there.) Students may also apply during the junior year for a joint degree program leading to the Barnard A.B. after four years and the Juilliard Master of Music at the end of a fifth year. Completion of the joint degree program is extraordinarily difficult, and a student must be highly motivated and exceptionally endowed both academically and musically in order to even attempt it. Students interested in either option should contact Professor Gail Archer at x45096 as soon as possible.

Program with Columbia's School of Law

Each year Barnard College has the option of nominating, in conjunction with the Columbia University School of Law, juniors with outstanding records to enter the Law School under the Accelerated Program in Interdisciplinary Legal Education (AIIE). Each student must submit a record of 90 points, 60 of which will have been completed at Barnard. She must have fulfilled all degree requirements except those for the major, which she must be able to complete together with the final 30 points at the Law School. Twelve of the 30 must be in the liberal arts and the remainder in appropriate law courses. To be nominated, a student must have an outstanding academic record (3.6 average or above) and have taken the LSAT by March of her junior year with a score in keeping with the median level of applicants accepted to the Columbia Law School in that academic year. Students interested in the program should consult Dean Kuan Tsu early in the junior year and with Dean Schneider to ensure fulfillment of graduation requrements. LSAT application are available in the Office of the Dean of Studies; the test is usually offered in June, October, December and February.
