Academic Support Services Academic Fellows

Academic Fellows are Barnard students who provide academic assistance and support for a particular class to groups of 2-4 students throughout the semester. Students requesting academic assistance fill out a request form in the Dean of Studies Office and are billed for the semester on a sliding scale. Assignments are made after the fourth full week of the semester, in order to give students time to assess their needs in a particular class. Students who wish to be Academic Fellows apply through the Dean of Studies Office during the program filing period. Fellows are paid $15.00 per hour of assistance and preparation. Academic Fellows and their study groups meet together for two, one-hour sessions per week. Members of the study group are expected to come to the sessions prepared with specific questions about the class.

Study Skills Workshops

Dean Link offers multi-session workshops on time managment, note taking, paper writing and exam preparation especially for first-year students, but any student needing extra assistance is welcome to contact her. In addition, a 9-week Academic Skills course called 'Barnard Success, No BS' is team taught by Dean Link and Santa Arocho and Cindy Suarez of the HEOP Office. Look for announcements in Bear Essentials (the Dean of Studies Office column in the Barnard Bulletin and on this website) regarding start dates and meeting days and times for these opportunities.

Writing Fellows

Writing Fellows are Barnard students who have been specially selected and trained to assist their peers with the writing process. They are available in the Writing Room, located on the first floor of Reid Hall. To make an appointment, just sign up for a time on the sheets outside the door. You don't have to have a full draft of a paper to make an appointment! If you bring notes, an outline, or an opening paragraph, a Writing Fellow can help you figure out how to move your ideas to the next level. In addition, Writing Fellows are attached to particular writing- intensive courses in a variety of departments. If you take such a course, you will be required to submit your paper to the Writing Fellow and have a conference with her before you submit your final draft to the instructor. NB: Writing Fellows are not copy editors! They will not proofread or spell-check your papers. Fellows are trained to help you clarify your ideas and arguments, to improve the style and structure of your writing, not its mechanics.
