Advising

Your adviser will be available to consult with you during your years at Barnard on the planning of each term's program, your academic goals and interests, and other aspects of college life. You will want to meet with your adviser after the first few weeks of class and again in the program-planning period. Your adviser is often the person who will write letters of recommendation for jobs or internships, study abroad programs, and graduate or professional schools, so you will want to check in with your adviser during the semester to talk about your plans and goals and to keep her/him informed about your academic work.

Advisers

Deans Marjorie Croes Silverman, Ani Bournoutian, James Runsdorf, Aaron Schneider, Vivian Taylor, and Christina Kuan Tsu, and the Registrar, Constance Brown, advise transfer students. Dean Christina Kuan Tsu also advises international students. Each transfer student will be assigned to a particular adviser, but all the deans are available for consultation. To make an appointment, a student may call x42024 or sign up on appointment sheets in the Office of the Dean of Studies, 105 Milbank.

Filing the Program

It is important to note the distinction between registration and program filing. All students will register from August 27 through September 3 (see the note on the general information page regarding online registration). The registration process enrolls a student in the College, but is not related to placement in classes. A student is enrolled in her classes upon filing an online program approved online by her adviser. Final programs must be filed online by Friday, September 12. You will actually attend your classes before filing the final program. The delay between registration and the filing of the program is intended to allow you to be certain of your selections. All students must consult with their advisers before the filing date on September 12.
