Research

Two major lines of inquiry in my current research agenda focus on:

  1. Issues of gender, race and culture in teaching and learning
  2. Social justice education theory and pedagogy

Social justice educational theory and practice as well as issues of gender, race and culture in educational settings have been a life long scholarly and pedagogical commitment. My early work, funded by the Ford Foundation, focused on gender equity among racially diverse girls and women in educational settings. This line of inquiry was followed by an examination of race and racism through in-depth interviews with gatekeepers in education and human services. My work in social justice education theory and pedagogy is reflected in my 1997 edited volume on this topic, completely revised and updated in 2007. A grant from the Third Millennium Foundation supported my work on the Storytelling Project: Teaching/Learning about Race and Racism through Storytelling and the Arts from 2005-2007. I speak about these issues at conferences and universities around the country.
