Columbia Daily Spectator seeks Opinion Section Columnist for Fall 2008

The Spectator accepts columnist applications from students at any school affiliated with Columbia University, including graduate schools. Columns are published every two weeks and writers are expected to edit with a deputy opinion page editor before publication. Deadlines will be strictly enforced.

To apply, please type your answers to these questions and e-mail the finished document to opinion@columbiaspectator.com.  The final deadline is August 1.

Please include a phone number with your application.

  1. What do you want your beat to be? What makes you qualified to cover it, and why is it important for the Spec to cover it? In other words, why should readers be interested in what you’re saying, and why should you be the one to say it?

  1. While we address many issues of national and international importance, the Spectator’s primary role as a newspaper is to examine the problems and hot topics on campus. As a columnist, how will your beat relate to the Columbia community? If you can, name one or two issues, events, etc. that occurred on campus last year that would fall under your beat.

  1. Keeping up a 900-word column every two weeks can be challenging in the midst of a busy semester. What makes you think you're capable of handling it? It is also difficult to consistently come up with creative ideas. Please give five fleshed-out column ideas. (More than five welcome)

  1. Who are some of your major influences, relevant to this column? (Including but not limited to writers, thinkers, politicians, teachers—anyone who helped you develop the ideas you hope to express or the way you hope to share them.)

  1. What other student organizations are you involved in and in what capacity?

  1. Please attach a full-length (900 words) sample column. Please take this question seriously—we would like to see the quality of work you intend to publish. This sample must be wholly original and may have not been previously published.

New Amsterdam Entertainment Internship

New Amsterdam Entertainment is a New York City based development and production company of feature films, miniseries, TV movies and related media products. In 2004, New Amsterdam produced (in association with Strike Entertainment) a remake of "Dawn of the Dead" (Universal) starring Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, and Mekhi Phifer. The film was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival and has grossed over $110M at the worldwide box office.

The company is currently developing the feature films "Keller" based on the Lawrence Block novel Hit Man with Jeff Bridges attached to star and a screenplay by Lawrence Block, Patrick McGrath and Maria Aitken; "The Night Flier: Fear of Flying" based on a screenplay by Mark Pavia and Stephen King; as well as an adaptation of Argentine author Federico Andahazi's critically acclaimed novel, The Merciful Women.

Wanted:

Enthusiastic interns to assist in the corporate office of a small, high profile NYC based Television and Feature Film Development and Production Company. Given the company's relatively small size, interns are exposed to almost every facet of the development, production and marketing of Feature Films and Television Miniseries. Interns provide general office support (phone, fax, filing, copying, etc.) which exposes them to the various functional aspects of producing dramatic entertainment for Network, Cable, or Major Studio distribution. These functional areas include: industry standard script and book evaluation, research of story ideas, public relations, and inventory management for completed productions.

Looking for students who are computer and internet savvy, phone friendly and professional, detail oriented, punctual, well organized, and that have strong communication and interpersonal skills. Great writing and analytical skills are a plus. Also must have a sense of fun! Days and hours are flexible.

To apply:

Fax cover letter and resume to Emily Austin-Bruns at (212) 922-0674 or send via email to mail@newamsterdamnyc.com.

POLITICAL JOURNALISM INTERNS WANTED

Manhattan Media, publisher of five weekly newspapers around the borough, is looking for summer interns with a particular interest in political journalism. Internships are unpaid, but will provide great, hands-on experience for college students interested in politics and/or writing. These will be far from the average internship: we're looking for 1-2 responsible, trustworthy, capable interns eager to write and help a weekly newspaper function.

Some knowledge of New York City politics is recommended, but most important is interest and industriousness.

Interested applicants should submit writing samples, résumés, and dates of availability to eidovere@manhattanmedia.com.

Theatre Summer Internship

The Frog & Peach Theatre Company is a Manhattan-based Shakespeare ensemble dedicated to bringing uniquely American Classical Theatre to the people of NY for free or at very low cost. Company members include Austin Pendleton (A Beautiful Mind, My Cousin Vinny) and Oscar Nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), among many others.

A non-profit organization (501 © 3), Frog & Peach was founded in 1996 by Actors Studio Members Lynnea Benson & Ted Zurkowski. The NY Times, Backstage Magazine, OOBR & others have given rave reviews for the company's exciting, fast-paced productions (Hamlet, Macbeth, & As You Like It, to name just a few). Unflinching in its approach to Shakespeare's often wildly politically incorrect world, and making logical use of the extreme violence and eroticism apparent in the plays, Frog & Peach is proud to have built a diverse and sometimes raucous NY audience that includes those who might otherwise have never gone to the theatre, let alone to have seen a classical play.

The candidate must have a strong desire to master the very profitable and in-demand art of fundraising with an established NY Theatre Co. Excellent writing and organizational skills are required. Must be disciplined, diplomatic, and prepared to deal with deadlines, unknown quantities, and artistic sensibilities. Verbal skills and charming impatience are more important than technical wizardry, but some computer proficiency is essential.

Duties:
-Research funding opportunities
-Write grant inquiries, adapt funding request template & learn proposal writing
-Attend valuable Foundation Center workshops (our dime)
-Assist in organizing benefit galas and productions featuring name NY performers

Schedule
10-15 hrs a week thru mid August; 20 or so thereafter
Flexible, work from home.
