Finally, interns will create featured site content such as digital timelines of social movements, social organizations and the lives of changemakers.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Both internships are opportunities to contribute at the ground level to what promises to become a leading social change media organization. As a young organization, we expect interns to help us co-create new projects and website features. Positions are flexible and can be molded to fit the strengths and interests of the intern.

All interns should have strong writing skills, the ability to self-manage, and the creativity, flexibility and sense of humor needed to work in a small and busy office. Journalism experience is a plus, but not necessary. Both internships are unpaid. A 12-18 hour weekly commitment is required for at least eight weeks—this time can be divided between work from home and from our Upper West Side office.

DOWSR BACKGROUND
Dowsr is an open web platform for changemakers to share stories that inspire positive action, provide practical 'how-to' insights, connect potential colleagues and – above all – provide a solution-oriented view of the world that highlights the growing landscape of creative social innovation. For our first project we are recruiting students and interns across the country to interview changemakers in a range of fields and organize and publish the interviews online. We will incorporate photographic essays, creative nonfiction and video stories as the project progresses.

Dowsr is intended to fill a need that has been identified through market research by people who seek to pursue careers of social impact, but don't know where to look for advice, ideas, encouragement or colleagues. It is also designed to provide a counterpart to the dispiriting view of the world presented by conventional media, which highlights problems and overlooks solutions. We specialize in asking thoughtful questions of people doing creative social-change work, recording their answers faithfully, and organizing the content so that it can be easily retrieved.

Dowsr was founded by David Bornstein (author, How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas) and launched with assistance from the Reynolds Program for Social Entrepreneurship at New York University.  Dowsr has received support from the Skoll Foundation, the Kellner Foundation and the William James Foundation.

HOW TO APPLY
Please submit a resume, cover letter (specifying which internship you are applying for and why) and a short writing sample (no more than two pages) to Amanda@dowsr.org. Please don't hesitate to e-mail with questions--our website is not yet public. Review of applications will occur on a rolling basis until positions are filled.

Columbia Daily Spectator seeks Opinion Section Columnist for Fall 2008

The Spectator accepts columnist applications from students at any school affiliated with Columbia University, including graduate schools. Columns are published every two weeks and writers are expected to edit with a deputy opinion page editor before publication. Deadlines will be strictly enforced.

To apply, please type your answers to these questions and e-mail the finished document to opinion@columbiaspectator.com.  The final deadline is August 1.

Please include a phone number with your application.

1. What do you want your beat to be? What makes you qualified to cover it, and why is it important for the Spec to cover it? In other words, why should readers be interested in what you’re saying, and why should you be the one to say it?

2. While we address many issues of national and international importance, the Spectator’s primary role as a newspaper is to examine the problems and hot topics on campus. As a columnist, how will your beat relate to the Columbia community? If you can, name one or two issues, events, etc. that occurred on campus last year that would fall under your beat.

3. Keeping up a 900-word column every two weeks can be challenging in the midst of a busy semester. What makes you think you're capable of handling it? It is also difficult to consistently come up with creative ideas. Please give five fleshed-out column ideas. (More than five welcome)

4. Who are some of your major influences, relevant to this column? (Including but not limited to writers, thinkers, politicians, teachers—anyone who helped you develop the ideas you hope to express or the way you hope to share them.)

5. What other student organizations are you involved in and in what capacity?

6. Please attach a full-length (900 words) sample column. Please take this question seriously—we would like to see the quality of work you intend to publish. This sample must be wholly original and may have not been previously published.

Fall On-Campus Video Production Internship

Starting Immediately!

Unigo.com (www.unigo.com) is a revolutionary online company dedicated to accurately representing America’s top colleges and universities with candid reviews and original content from the students who attend them. At Unigo’s core is 25 year-old Jordan Goldman, who authored the best-selling Students’ Guide to Colleges from Penguin Books, one of America’s five major college guidebooks.

To learn more about our company, see an article written by Jonathan Dee in the New York Times Magazine on Sept 21, 2008. Also see his interview on the NPR show, The Takeaway: http://www.thetakeaway.org/archives/2008/09/18/4

We are currently seeking one video production intern to act as a liaison between Unigo and Barnard’s community. The video production intern will produce and shoot compelling video footage, as well as conduct on-campus interviews and report breaking news events on campus. This content will be featured on our website and the intern will be asked to participate in editorial decisions when communicating with their editor via email and phone each week. Production interns who don’t own a camera will be provided with one to use which they can keep upon successful completion of assignments.

Applicants must be organized, responsible and creative. We will consider students from all class years and majors, but a strong interest in film or journalism is preferred.  The internship is unpaid, but we will buy you a camera and work with you to obtain course credit if desired. The internship will require about 4-6 hours a week (hours flexible). However, if you need a certain number of hours in order to receive course credit, we will increase your workload and assignments.

Please send a resumé or list of extracurricular activities, and any major scheduling conflicts aside from planned school breaks (i.e. you will be off-campus for a week) to mike@unigo.com with “Video Intern” in the subject of the email. The position starts immediately - we advise candidates to apply in a timely fashion.
