Barnard English Department
Information for Transfer Students:

The information below is for transfer students entering in fall 2005 and thereafter.  Transfers who entered before fall 2005 must take a section of English BC3103 or BC 3104 to satisfy the college English requirement:

If you are NOT a prospective English major:
Unless the Barnard College Registrar determines that a transfer student has successfully completed a satisfactory course at their previous institution, she must complete an English literature course or a section of English BC 3103 or BC 3104 (Essay Writing).

The course must be taken at Barnard, not Columbia. Creative writing courses are excluded and will not count. This requirement is separate from the GER requirement in literature, which is an additional requirement. Thus, one English literature course cannot serve to fulfill both the FYE and the GER requirements.

If you ARE a prospective English major:
You are required to take Literary Criticism and Theory (BC 3193).
Juniors should enroll in a Colloquium (BC 3159 or BC3160).
If you want to enroll in Creative Writing:
Submit a writing sample as soon as possible.  You may only apply to one Creative Writing course, and most of them require writing samples.  Since screenwriting is considered part of the Film Concentration, you may apply to screenwriting in addition to either a poetry or prose course.  However, you are strongly advised to take only one writing class in any given semester.  For further information, contact Prof. Timea Szell, who heads our Creative Writing division, at tszell(at)barnard(dot)edu.
If you are sure you want to be an English major:
Declare your major as soon as possible.  Then we can give you an English professor as an adviser enabling you to receive the best and most up-to-date guidance for your program.  Major Declaration forms are available from the Registrar and in our office.
