Alexander a. Cooley

Alexander Cooley

Alexander A. Cooley, Assistant Professor of Political Science, became a Barnard faculty member in 2001. His teaching includes courses such as "International Political Economy" and "Senior Research Seminar in International Politics." He has received the Gladys Brooks Foundation "Junior Faculty Excellence in Teaching" Award.

Professor Cooley's research interests are in international relations theory, centering on comparative semi-sovereign relations and client states, politics of United States' overseas military bases, and theories of contracting and organization.

During the Fall 2007 semester, Professor Cooley was an International Security Fellow of the Smith Richardson Foundation. His research and scholarship have also been supported by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Carnegie Corporation. Professor Cooley is an inaugural Open Society Fellow for 2009-2010.

His 2005 book Logics of Hierarchy (Cornell University Press) was a co-winner of the 2006 Marshall Shulman Prize for an outstanding monograph on the international relations or foreign policy in a state of the former Soviet Union or Eastern Europe. In addition to his academic writings, Professor Cooley has published policy-related pieces in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, Foreign Affairs, and Washington Quarterly.
