Timea K. Szell

Director of Creative Writing
Timea K. Szell, senior lecturer in English and director of creative writing, joined the faculty of Barnard in 1979. In addition to her teaching duties for the department of English, Dr. Szell is affiliated with Barnard's programs in medieval and Renaissance studies and women's studies.
Dr. Szell teaches such courses as "The Canterbury Tales"; "Medieval Images of Women"; "Fiction and Personal Narrative"; "Medieval Journeys"; and "Courtship in Chaucer."
Her scholarly interests include medieval literature and culture, with a focus on hagiography, gender, and liminal figures such as animals. A recent interest is "Human and Animal Studies," an interdisciplinary investigation of the boundaries between species.
Dr. Szell is currently translating her father's memoirs from Hungarian into English. She is also collaborating with medieval historian Henrietta Leyser on a project which deals with the material remnants and sites of the Venerable Bede's eighth century The Ecclesiastical History of the English People.
Dr. Szell's fiction has been published in The Southern Review and a number of literary journals.
