Requirements for the Major - 12 courses
The prerequisite for all classes is Introduction to the Study and Theory of Film, open to first-year students.

4 Introductory-Level courses:
FILM BC3201: Introduction to the Study and Theory of Film
(pre-requisite for further film courses at Columbia and Barnard;
Columbia's W3001 may be substituted for BC3201.)
FILM W3100: American Film History, 1930-60
FILM W3200: Silent Screen
FILM W3201: International Film History, 1930-60 or
W3202: International Film History 1960-90

3 Intermediate-Level courses:
FILM R4005: The Film Medium: Script Analysis
FILM W3050: The Documentary Tradition or W4098: Film Theory I
FILM W4145: Topics in World Cinema, or, with approval,
appropriate substitutions from the list of elective courses below.

3 Advanced-Level courses:
FILM BC3119: Screenwriting or FILM W3005: Laboratory in Writing for Film
ENGL BC3200: Production (substitutes for
FILM W3051: Laboratory in Nonfiction Filmmaking or
W3054: Laboratory in Fiction Filmmaking)
ENGL BC3998: Senior Seminar/Film or FILM W3840: Senior Seminar in Film Studies

The Senior Seminar requirement can be fulfilled at Columbia in the fall

There is no minor in film studies.

The Film Program does not offer Independent Study.
