General Questions - Physical Education

Q. I am studying abroad in my junior year. How do I complete my Physical Education requirement?

A. Complete a Deferral Form indicating the above. You will receive a one-semester deferral and must complete the Physical Education course on time or receive an "F".

Q. I had a scheduled meeting with my advisor and missed my Physical Education class. May I make it up?

A. No. Only absences for religious holidays may be made up.

Q. Where can I find out how to make up my absences for a religious holiday?

A. A listing of make-up opportunities is available online at our website.

Q. What is the Barnard Make-up Policy?

A. Students have the option to make up a class missed for a religious holiday or take it as one of the 4 allowable absences. The student must tell her instructor before the holiday is taken.

Q. I broke my foot and missed the last two weeks of my Physical Education class and ended up with five total absences for the semester. Will I receive a failing grade?

A. No, you will receive and incomplete and must make up one class the following semester prior to the mid-term date.

Q. I contracted mono two-thirds of the way through the semester and could not complete my Physical Education course. Will I receive an "F" for the course?

A. No. You must complete a Deferral Form and have Brenda Slade, Director of Health Services, authorize a medical deferral. You will receive a Defer on your transcript and must complete a physical education course the following semester.

Q. May I take Physical Education courses after I finish the two-semester requirement?

A. Yes, any Barnard student may attend the first class meeting of the semester to see if space is available. Students who have finished the requirement are not eligible to participate in the on-line lottery.

Note: Once you have fulfilled the requirement, you no longer receive point-credit for Physical Education.

Q. Who is eligible to register for Barnard Physical Education courses?

A. Any Barnard student who has not fulfilled her two-semester requirement. Students must submit a lottery form on-line.

Q. How many courses in Physical Education are required to graduate?

A. Barnard students must take 2 Physical Education courses -one in their first year and one before the end of their junior year.

Q. Do Dance technique courses count towards the Physical Education requirement at Barnard?

A. Yes, students may take Dance courses to fulfill their requirement.

Q. May I take two Physical Education or Dance courses during a semester?

A. Yes, but you may only receive credit for one course per semester.

Q. How do I know if I am in a Physical Education course?

A. If you submitted a form during the Physical Education Lottery on eBear, then you can check back online after 5pm on Friday of the first week of academic classes to see what class you have been assigned.

Q. How does a Columbia student get into a Barnard Physical Education course?

A. SEAS undergraduates may participate in the lottery by completing a form, in person at the Physical Office during the first week of the semester.

Q. What do I wear to Physical Education classes?

A. During the first class meeting, the instructor will discuss appropriate clothing and footwear for the class. All classes meet in the assigned classroom on the first two days of Physical Education classes. You must be dressed for activity on those days.

Q. Where do I get a Sports Facilities Pass to use the recreational facilities?

A. You can come to the Physical Education Department, 206 Barnard Hall and purchase a pass for $75 which includes a locker rental for the academic year. by check or money order payable to Barnard College.

Disability-Related

Q. Can a student with a disability take another class as a make-up?

A. No. This is a general Physical Education policy for all students as class lists are set at the beginning of the term with no late or one-time admits permitted.

Q. As a student with a chronic illness, may I "bank" a make-up in the event of a possible/future flare-up of my condition?

A. In consultation with their instructors and on a case-by-case basis, students with disabilities may "bank" a class by participating in any of the make-up opportunities listed on the Physical Education website (e.g. volunteer at one of the two blood drives each semester.)

Q. Do you have any suggestions for particular classes that are disability-friendly?

A. Students with disabilities have found that certain courses are beneficial to their particular needs.

For example, the Wellness class addresses issues pertaining to mind/body/spirit and includes only three classes with mild-moderate levels of physical activity.

You should meet with Sharon Everson, Chair of the Physical Education Department or Susan Quinby, Director of Disability Services to discuss your specific situation.

Q. If I have a chronic illness and am experiencing a flare-up during class, what should I do?

A. This question falls under the overall attendance/lateness policy. If a student needs to sit out for a brief period (i.e. 5 min), she should speak to the professor and will likely be provided a time-out. However, if the period extends to 10-15 minutes or longer, the student will be referred to the Student Health Service for an immediate check-in. Once again, please be pro-active and discuss your needs in advance with your instructor if you anticipate a large number of flare-ups.

Weight Room

Q. Does Barnard have a Weight Room? Where is it located?

A. Yes. Barnard College Weight Room is located in the basement of Barnard Hall, next to the pool and before the dance studios.

Q. I lost my ID card and had to get a new one. How do I replace my weight room sticker?

A. Bring your new card to the Physical Education office. Your blue weight room registration card is on file. The Assistant will validate your attendance at an orientation through your blue registration card and replace your weight room sticker.

Q. Who can use the Barnard Weight Room?

A. Barnard College students, Faculty/Staff and Columbia undergraduate students (CC, SEAS.) with a valid I.D. and Weight Room sticker may use the Barnard Weight Room.

Q. May men use the Barnard Weight Room?

A. Men may use the Barnard Weight Room during co-ed hours only.

Q. How do I get a Weight Room sticker?

A. Individuals who attend a Weight Room Orientation or participate in a Barnard College Weight Training Class will receive a Weight Room Sticker.

Q. Do I need to attend a Weight Room Orientation even if I have had previous experience using weight-training equipment?

A. Yes. Everyone who uses the Barnard College Weight Room must attend a Weight room Orientation or have completed a Barnard College Weight Training Class.

Q. Can I wear flip-flops in the Weight Room?

A. No. Proper workout attire, including athletic footwear, must be worn at all times when using the Barnard College Weight Room.

Open Gym

Q. Where is LeFrak Gymnasium?

A. LeFrak Gymnasium is located on the first floor of Barnard Hall.

Q. What is Open Gym?

A. Every weekend LeFrak Gym in Barnard Hall is available for participation in a variety of sports. Barnard College Students, faculty, staff and Columbia undergraduate students (CC, SEAS) with a valid ID are invited to participate.

Q. Can people reserve space during open gym?

A. Members of the Barnard community, who have a valid I.D. Card, may reserve up to an hour of gym time during open gym hours.

Q. Can people borrow sports equipment to use during open gym hours?

A. During open gym hours Barnard College Students, Faculty and Staff only may borrow equipment for use in the gym.

Intramurals

Q. Where and when do Barnard Intramurals take place?

A. Barnard Intramurals are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening, and occasional Sunday afternoons, in LeFrak Gymnasium.

Q. Who may participate in Barnard Intramurals?

A. Barnard College Students, Faculty, Staff and Columbia Undergraduate students (CC, SEAS) with a valid ID may participate in Barnard Intramurals.

Q. Are Barnard Intramurals affiliated with Columbia Intramurals?

A. No. Barnard Intramurals is independent from Columbia, although Barnard and Columbia students may participate in both.

Pool

Q. Do I need to wear a swim cap to use the Barnard Hall Pool?

A. Yes. A swim cap can be purchased in the Physical Education office, 206 Barnard Hall. The cost is $5 for Latex, Lycra and Silicone caps. We also have goggles for $10.

Q. How do I get use of a locker in the Barnard Hall locker room?

A. Lockers are available for use for the semester or academic year for a $10 fee. Go to the Physical Education Office at 206 Barnard Hall to register for one. Five dollars of the fee is refunded to Barnard and Columbia undergraduates when the combination lock is returned at the conclusion of your use of the locker.

Q. Are there other pools besides Barnard's within the university community? What are their average daily temperatures?

A. Barnard students may use the Barnard (82-84 degrees), Columbia (79 degrees) and Teachers College (84 degrees) pools, subject to local user guidelines. Please refer to the CU and TC websites for more detailed info regarding hours and usage.

FITbear Program

Q. What is the FITbear Program?

A. The FITbear Program is comprised of voluntary classes in Aerobics, Step, Body Sculpt, and Yoga offered to the Barnard community for a small fee. FITbear also offers CPR and Standard First Aid training and Alexander Technique and Massage.

Q. Are there any instructor training programs at Barnard?

A. Yes, the FITbear Program offers instructor training in Aerobics (Al).
