SMALL RESEARCH GRANTS

Award: Up to $60,000 over two years plus $5,000 for mentor

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
Award: Progressive stipend of $42,000 to start
Awarded for two-year training projects who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within preceding three years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support.
Pilot Grants

Seed money for new one or two-year projects awarded to individual investigators.

TEACHER-SCHOLAR AWARDS PROGRAM

Award: $75,000
Supports scholars, nominated by their respective institution, who are in their first five years of an independent academic career who demonstrate outstanding individual research attainment and promise.

Supports young scholars in the behavioral and social sciences and allied professional fields in their research on the development, early education, and health needs of immigrant children from birth to age 10, particularly those who are living in low-income families. Full-time, untenured but tenure-track or faculty tenured in past 4 years who have earned their doctoral degree within the last 15 years on June 30, 2005 is eligible to apply.

JEFFERSON SCIENCE FELLOWS

Award: $50,000 stipend
Each Fellow will spend one year at the U.S. Department of State for an on-site assignment in Washington, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions. All JSF assignments will be designed in consultation with regional and/or functional bureaus within the U.S. Department of State. Available for tenured academic scientists and engineers.

Awards are made to doctoral level scientists and engineers who can apply their special knowledge and research talents to research areas that are of interest to them and to the host laboratories and centers. Awards are made to Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (normally 5 years or more beyond the doctorate). Over 100 federal laboratories are used as locations. .

COTTRELL COLLEGE SCIENCE AWARDS

Award: Approximately $45,000
Supports significant research, which aids the development of undergraduate faculty and their students. The PI must have an appointment in a department of astronomy, chemistry or physics, which offers at least baccalaureate, but not doctoral degrees. Preference is given to tenured or tenure-track faculty and to faculty members in the first three years of their first appointment.
Molecular Evolution Fellowship
Deadline: January 15, 2009
Award: $40,000 for one year, $80,000 for two years
Postdoctoral Fellowships in Molecular Evolution are available to support research that uses the resources and research opportunities offered at one of the following Smithsonian Institution units: Laboratory of Analytical Biology at National Museum of Natural History (Washington, D.C.) and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama).
