Application numbers soar past 5,000 for the Class of 2015

Barnard’s Dean of Admissions Jennifer Fondiller reports that application numbers are up 12 percent over last year.  A total of 5,154 young women were vying for spots in the class of 2015.  This is the first time the College has received over 5,000 applications (last year’s total was 4,618), and follows a record 550 Early Decision applications received this fall, representing a 38 percent increase over last year.

Fondiller attributes the increased interest to her staff's targeted recruitment, as well as revamped tours and open houses that bring to life what’s unique about Barnard. And, she said, since the Diana Center opened last winter, there has been a huge amount of buzz among prospective students.

With the application review process underway, Fondiller has been struck by the degree of thoughtfulness, curiosity, and enthusiasm of this year’s applicants. “From what we’ve seen so far, this is a pool of remarkably accomplished young women – narrowing this field will not be an easy task,” she said.
