Due to the storm, Barnard College will close at 4pm today, for non-essential personnel. “Essential personnel" include staff in Facilities, Public Safety and Residence Halls.
Friday evening and weekend classes are cancelled but events are going forward as planned unless otherwise noted. The Athena Film Festival programs are also scheduled to go forward as planned but please check http://athenafilmfestival.com/ for the latest information.
Please be advised that due to the conditions, certain entrances to campus may be closed. The main gate at 117th Street & Broadway will remain open. Every year, Barnard students study abroad in distant parts of the world for a semester or full academic year. While overseas, many students use photography to document their experiences with local culture and regional highlights. Since 2002, the College has held an annual Study Abroad “SNAP” Photo Competition, allowing students to showcase photos and share memories upon their return to campus.
All study abroad students are eligible to enter the contest, including those in the Visiting International Students Program, for whom living in New York is their international experience. Students can submit up to four photos in four categories: landscape, journalism, documentary, and innovative use of media.
This year, the Office of International Programs received over 140 submissions from students who studied in more than 30 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, England, France, India, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Morocco, Netherlands, Panama, Peru, Poland, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, and Zambia. The contest was judged by Visual Arts Program Director Joan Snitzer, Associate Professor of Visual Arts John Miller, and Senior Associate Director for Leadership Development in Student Life Hayden Green.
Winners were announced at a reception in early April, held in the Louise Heublein McGagg ’59 Gallery in The Diana Center alongside an exhibit of the students’ photos. Anjelais Diaz ’13 won in the landscape category for her photo "Anfiteatro (Ampitheater)" taken in Valle de la Muerte, outside of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
Camille Bernier-Green ’13 won in the journalism category for “Splash of Red” taken in Paris, France.
The winner for documentary was “A Day with the Embera Drua Tribe of the Chagres River,” taken in Panama by Ashley Walker ’12.
Danning Ma, a VISP student from China, won innovative use of media for her photo “Vagina Monologues,” taken in Columbia University’s Lerner Hall.
This annual contest and reception is generously sponsored by the Camille Bouquet ’07 Memorial Fund. Camille Bouquet tragically passed away shortly after her study abroad experience in Tanzania in Fall 2005. Her family and friends established this fund in her honor, as a tribute to her love for international cultures and people.
Prizes are donated by the Barnard Store and Aramark, and additional resources are provided by International Initiatives Fund of the Offices of the Provost and the Dean of the College.
