Bestselling author Mary Gordon ’71 teaches online course for alumnae

This fall, alumnae will have the opportunity to relive their student experience via the virtual classroom, as Barnard launches its first online course with renowned writer Mary Gordon ’71, Barnard’s Millicent C. McIntosh Professor in English and Writing. With a series of taped lectures and live webinar discussions, Gordon will teach The Modern Novel, which promises to be a shocking exploration of sex, death, money, love, marriage, and terrorism. Registration is now open.

The course, beginning in September, will examine five 20th-century novels that have played key roles in shaping the genre: Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent, Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier, E.M. Forster’s Howards End, James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man, and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. Through online journaling and conversation throughout the semester, students will have the opportunity to work directly with the professor, whose critically acclaimed work includes four bestselling novels, a book of novellas, a collection of stories, and a book of essays.

“I’m really excited to bring alumnae back into the Barnard world again, to share this experience with them and connect in a very real way,” said Prof. Gordon. “What we’re doing is different from a standard online course, where the professor is often just a talking head. This will be much more individual and personal, in the same way that a Barnard education is individual and personal.”

“We are hoping to recreate the Barnard experience for our alumnae, no matter where in the world they are or how long they’ve been away from campus,” said Dorothy Denburg, Barnard’s Vice President of College Relations. “The intimate seminar setting, the personal attention from distinguished faculty, the liberal arts curriculum – we’re taking that all online.”

In the following video, Prof. Gordon provides an overview of the course.  Click here for further details and registration.
