ODS Newsletter September 2011

ODS September 2011 Newsletter

Welcome to all of the new members of the class of 2015, our new transfers and visiting students – and our returning students as well.  We hope that everyone has had a great summer and that this will be an exciting fall semester for all.  Please read our monthly e-newsletter for important information about ODS services, activities and most importantly: deadlines!

New students: please register with ODS

In our *Welcome to Barnard* emails sent to all new self-identified students over the summer, ODS reminded new students with disabilities to stop by ODS in 105 Hewitt Hall or call Susan Linn (212/854-4634) to schedule an ODS registration appointment with either Okie Hrycak (all LD/ADD students) or Susan Quinby (all others).  Please remember that you must formally register with ODS in order to receive any disability-related support services in the coming academic year.  All students must have appropriate disability-related documentation on file: a current psychoeducational evaluation for all LD/ADD students and a completed DDG (Disability Documentation Guidelines) for all other students.

Returning students: please schedule your FA’11 check-in

All returning students know, in the *ODS Rights and Responsibilities Contract*, students must schedule a check-in appointment at the beginning of each semester with either Okie or Susan Q.  Even if you don’t anticipate needing any services this fall – this brief meeting can be very helpful in reviewing your current status and building a plan for the coming year and beyond.

Test Accommodation Forms (TAF): Deadline is FRIDAY 9/30 AT 4PM

Please remember that all students who anticipate needing any type of test accommodations in FA’11 must have a signed TAF on file for each course – even if the only test is a final.  The TAF process involves four brief steps: schedule a check-in (or registration) appointment; meet with Okie or Susan Q to have the TAF/accommodations certified; meet with instructors to discuss accommodations and get signatures; return complete TAF to Susan L by Friday, September 30 at 4pm.  As per the email sent to all students on 9/12 – please remember that ODS will not be able to process any TAFs received after the 9/30 deadline – so please plan ahead!  Thanks to the many students who have already picked up their forms and are completing the process!

Marsteller Internship Program

Calling all ODS students who would like to complete an off-campus internship this semester!  ODS and Career Development (CD) invite you to apply for a Marsteller Internship grant, named in honor of Dean Julie Marsteller, founder of Disability Services at Barnard.  Grant applications are available on the CD website (www.barnard.edu/cd/students/internships/grants) – and the application deadline is Monday, September 26 at 11:59pm.  Application workshops will be held in CD on Tue 9/20 and Fri 9/23 – and additional info can be found in ODS or CD, Elliot Hall, 2nd Floor.  Grants are usually $500-$800.  Best of luck to all of you who apply!
