Due to the storm, Barnard College closed at 4pm Friday, for non-essential personnel. “Essential personnel" include staff in Facilities, Public Safety and Residence Halls.
Friday evening and weekend classes are cancelled but events are going forward as planned unless otherwise noted. The Athena Film Festival programs are also scheduled to go forward as planned but please check http://athenafilmfestival.com/ for the latest information.
The Barnard Library and Archives closed at 4pm Friday and will remain closed on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Library will resume regular hours on Sunday opening at 10am.
Please be advised that due to the conditions, certain entrances to campus may be closed. The main gate at 117th Street & Broadway will remain open. With the support of the Learning by Giving Foundation, a social entrepreneurship class at Barnard has awarded a $10,000 grant to GEMS: Girls Educational & Mentoring Services, which provides services for girls and young women who are victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. In The Wall Street Journal, adjunct professor Thomas Kamber is quoted discussing the experience for his students, who were responsible for vetting proposals from deserving charities. An excerpt:
""They may never have another chance to give away a $10,000 grant, and I think they knew they wanted it to go to something that was innovative and meaningful," said Thomas Kamber, the adjunct professor who teaches the course. "But they also wanted to make sure it was something that they could look back on a year from now and say, 'There's a difference that I made in the world.'"
