Remembering Paula L. Ettelbrick

The Barnard College community is deeply saddened by the recent death of Paula L. Ettelbrick, an important advocate for gay and lesbian rights and, for ten years, an adjunct instructor in the Department of Women's Studies.  In addition to her teaching role at Barnard, Ettelbrick held leadership positions with many influential civil rights group throughout her career, including the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

"Ms. Ettelbrick was a prominent voice in asserting that the many kinds of families created by homosexuals deserved acceptance and protection," wrote The New York Times on the occasion of her death.

Ettelbrick will be missed by colleagues at Barnard, where she taught courses in sexuality and the law from 2000 until 2010.
